Well here I am relaxing, lying in the sun, with a glass of beer, and of course taking the opportunity to learn more about medical science. The Lancet is one of my weekly reads and over the years I have obtained a huge amount of information from it.
This particular relaxation was in Zermatt, Switzerland, where I was having a short holiday baby-sitting rather than actually skiing. The air was cold but the sun was strong and I was taking advantage of it.
During the past 30 years I have come to realise that the sun is of immense importance in maintaining good health and many of my Posts will be on the subject of the benefits of the sun and vitamin D.
Something that causes me great irritation is "conventional wisdom" that is often wrong and in conflict with published evidence or common sense. It may be based on dogma rather than evidence and indeed few people have access to the evidence. This is particularly true with coronary heart disease (CHD), which has been a major cause of death in western Europe and North America during the past 70 years. It formed an epidemic responsible for about ten million deaths in the UK alone, and many more in other countries. It was a pandemic that occurred simultaneously in all continrents, but not in the tropics. Is this because of so much more sun exposure in the tropics? The pandemic is now virtually at an end, hence the emergence of the new "epidemic" at the present time, that of very old age. There will be many postings on this subject as well.
My main work during the past 45 years has been emergency medicine but more recently I have been devoting more time to gastroenterology. I have also had a wide experience in chronic fatigue syndrome management and that will also the subject of future posts. I have also had a great deal of experience in medical management, on which I will have more to say.
I also hope to be producing more short e-books which will come to your attention. I hope you enjoy the Posts, and please pass them on to other people who might be interested.
